Success Story: Connecticut Office of Rural Health
"The Connecticut Office of Rural Health worked with HWF on two projects over the past two years and found them to be outstanding partners. The first project was a research study and report with findings, recommendations and next steps to improve the overall health of Connecticut's rural residents. The second project was an assessment of non-emergency medical transportation services for a 17-town rural area in Litchfield County. HWF's ability to provide research related to both projects and work with community leaders and our state office staff provided us with products that are currently useful and give us guidance for continued work in both areas." In 2006, the Connecticut State Office of Rural Health (CT-ORH) commissioned HWF to assess the health care services available to Connecticut's rural population and identify barriers that prevent rural residents from accessing health care services. HWF assembled and compiled extensive health and related demographic data at the town, county, and state levels. The data collection process involved: 1) reviewing previous reports and needs assessments; 2) collecting indicator data from state, federal, and local sources; 3) conducting a health care provider survey; and 4) interviewing individual health care providers to better understand the barriers rural residents face in accessing care. The final report, Rural Community Health in Connecticut: Challenges and Opportunities, includes findings, recommendations and action steps to improve the health of Connecticut's rural residents. CT-ORH received a grant to assess non-emergency medical transportation in upper Litchfield County in response to one of the report's recommendations. |
